The Eltham Leisure Centre leadership team were left in awe and feeling truly inspired when hearing from local athlete Jaryd Clifford, who shared his journey to date and the exciting future he has in store on the world stage.
Clifford joined the leadership meeting to share his journey from humble local beginnings to taking the world stage culminating in an amazing Bronze medal in the 1500m at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London. Although visually impaired from the age of 3, Jaryd has managed to hold his own in able-bodied competition as well. Securing Victorian junior state titles over 1500m and 3000m, including the 2017 Victorian State U20 1500m title.
Jaryd is currently ranked in the top 1500m junior runners in Australia and is striving to represent his country at the 2018 Junior World Championships – an able bodied event which would be a truly remarkable achievement.
Following this Jaryd’s next milestone is Tokyo 2020 and is striving to medal at this event.
Jaryd was awarded the Marc Angel Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the recent Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards early this month.
The team at the Eltham Leisure Centre is honored to support Jaryd in his quest for glory and you will soon see him in the health club focusing on his strength and conditioning program.
